“Now that another year has gone by, everyone is talking about New Years Resolutions. But it’s easy to move quickly from one year to the next, without looking back to see what we’ve done that's really of value. So, what do we value most? I don't want to let 365 days go by without any significance, so in 2008 I want to do more for God. I want to focus on what matters most.
Things get pretty simple when you look back at an entire year that’s gone by. For me the thing that matters most can be summed up in one word: love. It's a little four letter word that makes all the difference. I haven't done anything of value this year if I haven't loved, not with my own strength, but through Jesus Christ. He says love is the most significant thing we can do because it doesn't just have earthly value, it has eternal value. True acts of love will outlast everything. It's a humbling thought, because I know I fall down often, fighting my selfish nature. We all have to fight against it and choose to love like Christ.
But I've only found selfishness to be the most empty feeling. It only leaves us lonely, bitter, and constantly discontent. But when I choose to love, instead of falling into that selfish trap, there is something accomplished that can never be taken away. Even if the people you love don’t give back, you have still honored God. He is one we’re living for, and loving for!
Most of what we did in 2007 will be forgotten, unless it was marked by love. So, my New Year's Resolution for 2008 is decided. Unfortunately there isn't a 12-step program that goes with it. Instead I have to die to myself, and live through the Holy Spirit, who is the only way through which we can truly love. And by doing this, we will change the world.
This year I will focus on what matters most: To love like Christ would, without any selfish motive or agenda, more than I did in 2007. Join me in my New Year's Resolution!”
